Bearing shield is a part of an electrical machine. Its purpose is to support the bearing which in turn supports the rotor. Both sleeve and roiling bearings are used in the motors of this study. Motors with sleeve bearings require stiff rotor support due to the bending caused to the bearing shield by the bearing. Two-pole motors are sensitive to vibrations at a frequency that is twice the supply frequency. The natural frequencies of the shields must surpass this electromagnetic excitation. Motors with rolling bearings, in turn, need a bearing shield for which the axial natural frequencies surpass the most significant bearing pass frequencies.
