Insularism and “ creolization” ; theoretical approach. The spatial representations referred to are the societies established in three groups of islands (the Antilles, the Mascareignes and the “Portuguese” islands off the coast of W est Africa) that are very strongly influenced by the Creole phenomenon, which is both a linguistic and a cultural matter. The speaker of Creole sees his linguistic space (i.e. the spatial range of his idiomatic language) as very limited in area, though this is by no means seen as a disadvantage since this supposed isolation is compensated by another linguistic tool (e.g. French, English, Portuguese) which provides openings into much wider areas.
