The popular downtown Portland luncheonette opened on 6 November 1952 (as Charley\u27s on The Square ), and the photographs accompanied an article commemorating their 25th year in business. Owner Charley Chorney said the name On the Square was a play on words, for the diner\u27s Monument Square address and their honest fair-and-square business.
