The building was named in memory of Joseph Ralph Libby (1845-1917). The Libby Building was designed by Portland Architect Frederick Augustus Tompson, and built in 1897 for the Y.M.C.A. (Young Men\u27s Christian Association). When the Y.M.C.A. moved to newer quarters (70 Forest Avenue) in 1927, the Libby Building served as a commercial office building until its demolition in January 1981. The footprint became the site of the Portland Museum of Art Payson building. Photos published in the Evening Express, on 16 March 1978.
