At the time of this photograph, the building was home to Portland School of Art (later known as Maine College of Art), comprising the college\u27s Library, the Graphic Design department, the Photography department, various classrooms, and studios. Prior to its years as P.S.A., Safford was home to Shaw Business College (beginning in 1938). Safford House was built for the William Safford family in 1858, designed by architect Charles A. Alexander (who also designed the Chestnut Street Methodist Church, and Saint Stephen\u27s Episcopal Church).
