Southern Nevada Water Supply project Problem: The plan for the Southern Nevada Water Supply Project contemplates development of the project in three stages. In the report for the Pacific Southwest Water Plan the first stage of the project was included for immediate authorization and construction in Phase I, while the second and third stages were included in Phase II. The State of Nevada has urged that the entire project be authorized for construction under Phase I. Discussion: The Southern Nevada Water Supply Project is a comprehensive plan designed to meet the rapidly increasing municipal water requirements in the Southern Nevada area by pumping water from Lake Mead. The project would utilize the major portion of Nevada's share of Colorado River water. The Project Report, which has been submitted to the Commissioner, recommends that the entire project be authorized. The plan contemplates construction of the project in three stages. Stage 1 would supply the needs until about year 1980-1990, after which stages 2 and 3 would be constructed as required to meet the growing water demands. Stage development for the project is desirable to provide flexibility in the timing of future installations and to allow for deviations from the projected future growth rates of population and industry. In the first stage sufficient capacity would be provided in certain features to accommodate the ultimate project.
