c. Southern Nevada Water Supply Project--Estimated cost--$72,108,000 A feasibility report on this project is now under review in this office. It should be ready for transmittal to the States and Federal agencies for review by the middle of August. Population and industrial expansion has taken place at such an accelerated pace in the Las Vegas area that present water supplies and distribution facilities are inadequate to meet requirements. Ground water is the present principal source of supply, and withdrawals for several years have exceeded safe yield with resultant critical depletion of the ground-water basin and reduction in artesian pressures over much of the area. Water supply for fire protection is inadequate during summer months, and constant supervision has been necessary to enforce water conservation measures. The project is urgently needed and has intensive and widespread State and local support. d. Lining of California Canals When shortages come? Only a rough reconnaissance study has been made of the canal lining proposals. Reliable cost estimates are not yet available. Detailed studies are underway for the Coachella Canal with a feasibility report scheduled for completion in December 1965. Detailed studies of All-American Canal lining have not yet been initiated.
