California Since 1949, the California Fish and Game Department has invested $1,887,000 on fishery developments related to the inland waters of Southern California. Of the 18 projects developed for fishing, 1 produced a 40-acre warmwater fishing lake in otherwise dry Whittier Narrows flood control reservoir at a cost of $500,000; 16 provided improvements and access to 17 reservoirs totaling 18,000 acres, and to the Salton Sea; and 1 provided dams for the maintenance of flows and general improvements on 22 streams. The Department also invested $1,000,000 in the development of 1,970 quail guzzlers located almost entirely in Southern California. The Department operates two trout-rearing stations, the Fillmore and Mojave units, relatively close to Los Angeles. They produce 265,000 pounds of trout per year. California also has acquired and leased an area of 11,900 acres south and east of the Salton Sea which it manages for waterfowl and on which it permits public hunting. Nevada The Nevada Fish and Game Commission has developed one area of 9,805 acres for wildlife management at a cost of $335,000. It is located in part on an of Lake Mead, the huge reservoir back of Hoover Dam. The area produces feed for migrating and wintering waterfowl and provides some waterfowl and upland-game hunting. New Mexico The New Mexico Came and Fish Department operates a trout hatchery at Glenwood in the southwestern sector of New Mexico which produces 15,000 pounds per year. It also operates a wildlife management area of 2,269 acres for waterfowl and upland game in the same general area of the state, and two fishing lakes totaling 92 acres. Federal Installations National Fish Hatcheries These are three Federal fish hatcheries in the Pacific Southwest. All are located in the State of Arizona. These are the Williams Creek National Fish Hatchery 13 miles from the town of McNary on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation; the Alchesay National Fish Hatchery about 5 miles from Whiteriver on the same Indian reservation; and the Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery 14 miles below Hoover Dam on the eastern 6Epson Perfection 4870 Photo, 400 dpi, 8 bit, 16,023,552 byte
