EL PROTECTORADO ESPAÑOL EN MARRUECOS: ALGUNOS RASGOS DISTINTIVOS Y SU PROYECCIÓN EN EL PRESENTE

Throughout the period during which they shared control of the Protectorate of Morocco, relations between France and Spain were, with rare exceptions, strained. This was especially the case during the two World Wars, the Spanish Civil War and the years preceding the independence of Morocco in 1956. This article examines the historical background to this state of affairs. Today, more than 50 years after the «protected» country was granted its independence, it is clear that the traditional rivalry between the original «protecting» powers, even if tempered to some extent within the context of the European Union, is still alive and, according to the circumstances, springs to the surface with more or less vigour.Las relaciones entre Francia y España durante el periodo en el que compartieron el Protectorado en Marruecos fueron en general, salvo en contados momentos, bastante confl ictivas, particularmente durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, la Guerra Civil española y la Segunda Guerra Mundial, así como en los años que precedieron a la independencia de Marruecos en 1956. Este artículo examina las circunstancias históricas que originaron y propiciaron esta situación. Hoy, transcurridos más de cincuenta años desde la independencia del país «protegido», podemos constatar que, aunque más o menos diluida en el contexto de la Unión Europea, la rivalidad tradicional entre las dos antiguas potencias «protectoras» sigue existiendo y se manifi esta, según los casos, con mayor o menor pujanza
