Pensaba que Te Había Olvidado: El daño duradero de la Trauma que Viene de Tortura en la Dictadura Chilena

Research question: Is there a more useful model to characterize the torture that was implemented in Chile using the context of theory and history to establish an in-depth understanding of the symptomology and effects of the experience of torture survivors? Objective: The general objective of this study is to establish the origin of the methods of torture used during the Pinochet dictatorship and use these results to suggest a model of reparations that is more wholistic. The specific objectives are to understand the intervention and instruction by the CIA in Chile, to study the testimonies of torture during the dictatorship and deepen the understanding of the events, and finally to analyze the consequences in survivors of torture and the systems of reparations. Background: The coup d’état in Chile in 1973 removed the communist president, Salvador Allende from power and put in his place Augusto Pinochet. Moments after, all over the country violent detentions and torture, in line with secret studies carried out by the CIA in the United States began. After 17 years, democracy returned to the country and the process of healing and repairing began. The government conducted research and some studies about the abuses of human rights, but the nature of the damage, which was calculated by American psychologists has not been studied extensively. Much of the trauma of the dictatorship still lives today in Chile. Methodology: Three interviews were conducted in Arica, Chile in November of 2019. One was done with a mental health specialist in PRAIS, Arica. The other two interviews were done with human rights activists who were detained during the dictatorship. The interviews were semi-structured with open ended questions about experiences from work and from the participants personal lives and opinions. Results: The results of this study have two parts. With an extensive analysis of the written testimonies of survivors of torture, it is possible to clearly see the root of the methodology of Chilean torture in the American projects and studies. Furthermore, the symptomology seen in the population of survivors in Chile is very similar to the effects seems in these same American studies, indicating the success of the implementation and suggesting a more extensive damage. With these results and this information, it is possible to improve the system and model of treatment for survivors of torture—by using these initial studies to understand how it is possible to heal the mind from such an enormous amount of damage. Conclusions: The Chilean government has tried to heal and repair the state while attempting to jump over the step of justice. There have been investigations about the human rights abuses (with some weaknesses, but in a comprehensive manner), but reparations in terms healthcare, a low sum of money, and a scholarship for a college degree cannot substitute the process of justice. With a 50 year classification of the documents with information about torturers and those who participated inhuman rights abuses, it is not possible to achieve a state of justice. In addition, with impunity it is impossible to heal psychosocial wounds. With a focus on the perpetrators of these crimes against humanity, it is possible to see the influence of the United States and their meticulous methodology of torture. La pregunta de investigación: ¿Hay una manera más útil de caracterizar la tortura implementada en Chile que usa el contexto de teoría y historia para establecer un modelo con un entendimiento más profundo de la sintomatología y las secuelas que los sobrevivientes de tortura experimentan? Objetivo: El objetivo general de este estudio es probar el origen de los métodos de tortura durante la dictadura de Pinochet y usar este resultado para sugerir un modelo de reparación más integral. Los objetivos específicos son entender la intervención y las estructuras de esa por la CIA en Chile, estudiar los testimonios de tortura durante dictadura para profundizar entendimiento de que paso profundamente, y al final analizar las secuelas de sobrevivientes de tortura y los sistemas de reparación con un enfoque del contexto histórico. Antecedentes: Momentos después del golpe del estado chileno en 1973, que boto el presidente comunista Salvador Allende de su posición de poder y puso Augusto Pinochet en poder, en todo el país detenciones violentas y tortura de acuerdo con estudios secretos de la CIA empezaron. Después de 17 años, democracia retomo el país y el proceso de recuperación empezó. El gobierno conducto unos estudios e investigaciones sobre los abusos de derechos humanos, pero la natura del daño tan calculado por psicólogos estadounidenses no ha habido estudiado profundamente. Mucha de la trauma de la dictadura sigue viviendo hoy día en Chile. Metodología: Se conducto tres entrevistas en Arica, Chile en Noviembre de 2019. Una realizo con una especialista de salud mental en PRAIS. Las dos otras entrevistas fueron realizadas con activistas de DDHH que fueron detenidas durante la dictadura. Las entrevistas fueron semiestructuradas con preguntas abiertas sobre experiencias laborales y personales. Resultados: Los resultados de este estudio tienen dos partes. Con una análisis extensiva de los testimonios escritos por sobrevivientes de tortura, se puede ver claramente la raíz de la metodología de tortura en Chile en los estudios y proyectos estadounidenses. Además, la sintomatología visto en la población de sobrevivientes en Chile es muy similar a las secuelas visto en estos mismos estudios, indicando el éxito de implementación y sugiriendo un daño más profundo. Con estos resultados y esa información, se puede mejorar el sistema y modelo de tratamiento para sobrevivientes de tortura—se puede usar los estudios iniciales para entender como se puede recuperar la mente de este daño enorme. Conclusiones: El gobierno Chileno ha tratado recuperar y reparar el estado mientras tratando saltar la etapa de justica. Ha habido investigaciones sobre los abusos de DDHH (con debilidades pero de una manera comprehensiva) pero reparación en los términos de atención de salud, una pensión baja, y una beca de un grado universitario no pueden sustituir el proceso de justica. Cuando una clasificación de 50 años de todos los documentos que tienen la información de los torturadores y todas personas que participan en el montón de abusos de DDHH es mantenido, no es posible cumplir un estado de justica. Además, cuando hay impunidad, no es posible recuperar las heridas psicosociales. Con un enfoque de los perpetradores de estos crímenes contra humanidad, se puede ver la influencia de los EEUU y su metodología meticulosa de tortura
