Introduction: Midwifery is historically and traditionally practised by women. The advent of obstetrics and physicians brought men into the profession. In the 19th century, the midwife became the subordinate of the doctor in a role that was previously exclusively hers. The end of the 20th century is marked by a strong evolution of the profession which gains in autonomy. Midwifery training was opened to men in 1982.
