White fear and black menace: examples of Afro-Cuban resistance in Cecilia Valdes

During the nineteenth century the importation of African slaves increased drastically in Cuba. The fear of uprisings and the conquest of new spaces by the afro-descendant population led the intellectuals to deal with the question of the Negro in their novels. In Cecilia Valdes, Cirillo Villaverde portrays those complex interethnic relationships and questions the current model of society.
