C. neoformans is a pulmonary fungal pathogen that requires the development of T1 immunity to clear the infection. The development of T2 responses results in susceptibility and is characterized by the recruitment of eosinophils into the lungs, high serum IgE levels, and production of T2 cytokines such as IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13. The events that characterize the early phases of the T2 responses to C. neoformans remain unknown. The goal of this thesis was to determine the role of IFN-gamma, IL-4, IL-10, and IL-5 in susceptibility to C. neoformans using C57BL/6 background mice with a disruption in the gene that encodes for these cytokines (knockout mice).
