This paper presents some of the main conjectures about the process of selection by consequences in thescope of cultural practices, especially concerning the unit of selection unit: if the individual in groupsituation, or if the group itself. The essay also analyzes the way by which interlocking patterns ofcontingencies are selected and their role in the maintenance and modulation of cultural practices. Indiscussing the implications of an integrated evolutionist approach to the phylogenetic, ontogenetic andcultural “levels”, the study argues for selection by consequences ocurring in the group and not upon thegroup, which implies the proposition of adopting the three term contingency as the adequate andsufficient unit of selection ofBehaviora...
