Win started teaching at the Darwin Infant School in 1954 where the work was challenging. The Scottish country dancing class which Win helped found provided lively company along with the Musical Comedy Society. Married to James H. B. Bell in 1956, Winifred left teaching to start their family of two daughters and four sons. In those days there were no cr?ches in Darwin, except for a small play centre in Smith Street, where a child could be left for an hour or so while visiting the dentist. With six children in eight years Win felt she could not have managed taking up paid work and stayed at home for approximately eighteen years.
