In 1951 Fay and her husband Keith Cheater came to the Northern Territory. He was the first white Australian builder appointed by the Methodist Overseas Missions to work at Milingimbi and worked there for two years. They had four children, three sons and a daughter. The family then moved to Yirrkala, where Fay taught cooking, sewing and craft work. In 1956 they returned to Darwin, Fay played the organ at various church services around Darwin including Bagot Reserve and the Leprosarium. Between 1970 to1974 she took a position as a teacher's aide at Darwin Special School.
