32Holmes was working at the 2 1/2 mile railway workshops and was one of the first men to volunteer for active service. He was a veteran of service with the Munster Fusiliers and voluntarily chose to leave Darwin to join his old regiment.Civil EngineerHolmes sailed from Darwin on SS 'Mataram' on 22 August 1914. He enlisted with the New Zealand Army and embarked at Alexandria on 12 April 1915 for the Dardanelles. Missing in action on 25th April 1915. Declared "Believed killed" in July 1916 so was not recorded on the Roll of Honour produced for a memorial service which was held in Darwin on 25 April 1916. Listed on the Darwin cenotaph as P. E. L.
