Communication le 27 janvierInternational audienceThis paper reports the construction of the category of reflexive verbs and its syntactic (essential / accidental) and semantic (reflected / reciprocal) subdivisions, in the grammars of French eighteenth and nineteenth centu- ries. It is mostly the term “reciprocal”, inherited from the Latin tradition, which is used by the grammarians of French, which creates ambiguity as it refers to the reflexive meaning. The organization of the class depends on two semantic and syntactic issues closely related : the definition of the fonction “complément” and the delineating of additional classes of verbs.
