[1]219 Grand Ave.Waukesha, WisSept. 30, 1896My dear Freind Mr. Muir.Your most kind letter of July was received and I was glad to hear from you but regret you did not receive my leter inviting you to visit us when you were in Wis. You have my sympathies on the loss of your mother. I have lost both my father and mother and I realize the loss so much. I have remained single being the youngest one in the family and having kind of a charge, my last sister who was with me died five years ago. I congratulate you on your honorary degree at Harvard and I think with you that this University ought to have been the first to confer that honor and it would have been an honor ot the University.02159 [2]If it had been possible for you to have visited me when here I would have had Judge Griswold and J. N. Stewart at the same time You recollect that their room at the University was just above yours and Mr. Davids. I get up to the university about once a year, and I thnk of you every time when I look at the rooms we occupied. On my trip a few years ago, I made you a short visit in my return home. I saw you at Prof. Sweets home. I was Co. Supt. of Schools of Waukesha Co. for eleven years and I recommended at Prof. Sweets theory to the teachers of the county. A year ago I wrote to Scribner and got a copy of your book Mountains of California. I enjoyed it so much. Would be glad to hear from youEver yours trulyJohn Howitt0215
