Los espacios del sentir : el Kiasma como modelo de percepción espacial

Since the beginning of the agricultural era -almost 10,000 years ago-, and until the present time, the processes of change and innovation in almost every aspect of human life has been steadily accelerating. Ever since the early twenty-first century, more than half of humanity lives in mega-cities in an environment largely created by man. Despite the owrwhelming changes of the last few centuries, we continue with the same anatomy and many of the instincts of our ancestors ; our body continues to possess the same mechanisms that served for the survival of the hunter­ gatherers tens of thousands of years ago.We belong to a global and continuous system of natural phenomena. We are born into this world with the ability to detect,-through almost every centimeter of our body, minimal changes around us; we can grasp -not only through our eyes and our mind, but also through muscles,ears , nose and skin, the environment in which we live and move around. Still, it is easy to imagine that the majority of these mechanisms are eroded , silenced or suffocated by modern life.Synthetic materials, non-natural substances, artificial light and weather ,are part of our daily routine. The average resident of the big cities of the XXI century is gradually separated from his 'bodily experiences'.This detachment from the 'human experience', due to centuries-long processes, is the result of technology developments and great changes in the physical context, which have caused social and cultural changes of all kinds. Many new technological advances (and the consequent cultural changes) tend to turn us away from the reality of 'here' and 'now', and the results of these events are reflected , for example, in the loss of social skills and even in certain cognitive changes . .According to different authors cited in the thesis ,architecture can be part of the processes that push us away from natural occurrence,or it can lead to the opposite, since it holds the potential to create an environment in which our repressed mechanisms can be revived. Architecture can return us to the natural phenomena and bring us back to the 'human experience', which is significantly reduced and terribly worn in contemporary culture. The text reflects on the relations hip between the body and the built environment, its main objective is to highlight the great potential that lies in a space which is designed intentionally in order to be perceived. With the intention of not being left only within a theoretical framework, we chose to use a case study. This fact has also been essential since the main argument of the thesis is that architecture should be experienced in person. The chosen building was Stewn Holl's Kiasma Museum.According to the work hypothesis ,it is a relatively new building, made with materials and techniques of the late twentieth century and designed by an architect who is particularly attentive to the point of view of the user. The field work consisted of delivering questionnaires to some 170 visitors of the building, after completing their visit, and a subsequent study of these. Through the applied methodology,the work analyzes the perception people haw of the built environment, both through the user's perspective and from the point of view of the architect The examination of the intentions of Holl for the building; a study of the plans of the museum; the critical view of different professionals in the building, and reviewing the questionnaires distributed to users , have all given very relevant results. The conclusions of the thesis speak of the possibilities and the critical role that architects and architecture schools have in the creation of a 'correcting' and 'curing' environment versus contemporary ailments .Desde el inicio de la era agrícola hace casi 10 mil años y hasta nuestros tiempos, los procesos de cambio e innovación en casi todos los aspectos de la vida humana se han ido acelerando constantemente. Ya desde los principios del siglo XXI más de la mitad de la humanidad vive en mega-ciudades en un entorno mayoritariamente creado por el hombre .A pesar de los cambios abrumadores de los últimos siglos, seguimos con la misma anatomía y muchos de los instintos de nuestros antecesores; nuestro cuerpo continúa poseyendo los mismos mecanismos que sirvieron a los cazadores-recolectores para sobrevivir hace decenas de miles de años. Pertenecemos a un sistema global y continuo de fenómenos naturales. Nacemos en este mundo con la capacidad de detectar, a través de casi cada centímetro de nuestro cuerpo, los mínimos cambios que nos rodean; podemos captar -no solo a través de nuestros ojos y nuestra mente-, sino también a través de los músculos y oídos, el olfato y la piel, el entorno en el que habitamos y donde nos movemos. Aun así, es fácil imaginar que la mayoría de estos mecanismos están erosionados, acallados o ahogados por la vida actual. Los materiales sintéticos, las sustancias no naturales, la luz y el clima artificiales, forman parte de nuestra rutina diaria. El ser humano -residente de las grandes urbes del siglo XXI-, se ve apartado paulatinamente de sus 'vivencias corporales'. Este alejamiento de la 'experiencia humana' -debido a un proceso de siglos-, es el resultado del desarrollo de tecnologías y grandes transformaciones en el contexto físico, las cuales han originado cambios culturales y sociales de todo tipo. Muchos de los nuevos avances tecnológicos (y consecuentes cambios culturales) tienden a apartarnos de la realidad del 'aquí' y el 'ahora', y los resultados de estos hechos se ven reflejados, por ejemplo, en la pérdida de habilidades sociales y hasta en ciertos cambios cognitivos a nivel evolutivo . Según diferentes autores citados en la tesis, la arquitectura puede formar parte de los procesos que nos siguen alejando y desconectando de las existencias naturales, o bien conducirnos a lo contrario, ya que atesora un potencial para crear un entorno en el cual se pueden reactivar nuestros mecanismos reprimidos. La arquitectura puede devolvernos a los fenómenos naturales y reconducirnos a ' la experiencia humana', que se desgasta y se disminuye significativamente en la cultura contemporánea. El texto reflexiona sobre la relación entre el cuerpo y el espacio construido; su objetivo fundamental es destacar las grandes posibilidades que ofrece un espacio intencionadamente pensado para ser percibido. Para no quedarnos en el marco teórico , optamos por emplear un caso de estudio. Este hecho también ha sido indispensable ya que el argumento fundamental de la tesis es que la arquitectura hay que experimentarla en persona. El edificio elegido ha sido el museo Kiasma de Steven Holl. De acuerdo con la hipótesis del trabajo, se trata de un edificio relativamente nuevo, hecho con materiales y técnicas de finales del siglo XX y concebido por un arquitecto especialmente atento al punto de vista del usuario. El trabajo de campo consistió en la entrega de cuestionarios a unos 170 visitantes del edificio tras terminar su visita, y en su posterior análisis. Mediante la metodología empleada, en el trabajo se analiza la percepción que el ser humano tiene del entorno construido, tanto a través de la perspectiva del usuario como desde el punto de vista del arquitecto. El análisis de las intenciones de Holl para el museo; un estudio de los planos de dicho museo; la opinión crítica de los diferentes profesionales sobre el edificio, y la revisión de los cuestionarios repartidos a los usuarios, han dado resultados muy relevantes. Las conclusiones de la tesis reivindican las posibilidades y el papel crítico que tienen los arquitectos y las escuelas en la creación de un entorno 'corrector' y 'curador' para los males contemporáneo
