The paper considers the methodology of developing the foreign students conceptual knowledge while learning the Russian language. The conceptual knowledge is defined as notional reality reflection perceived and expressed in a foreign (Russian in this case) language. Within the framework of the functional approach, the author analyzes the correlation between the cognitive types of knowledge and competences, and reconsiders one of the latest linguistic concepts - the theory of linguacultural consciousnesses by the Russian-language scholar J. N. Karaulov- that can be applied to teaching Russian as a foreign language.
