Examples of the effect of ion irradiation on the properties of materials are discussed. The ion energies span over several orders of magnitude, from keV up to GeV. The techniques discussed include ion beam assisted thin film deposition, ion implantation at intermediate energies and large fluences, and low fluence ion irradiation at very high energies. The materials include metals, ceramic powder and polymers, treated with ions for changing structure or chemical composition, in order to influence corrosion properties, catalytical properties and mechanical properties, or for fabricating nanofilters for gas separation and metallic nanoneedles
