Phraseology as a stylistic feature in novels originally written in English and their translations into Catalanan

This paper is an analysis of the stylistic function of phraseology in three contemporary novels, originally written in English —Enduring Love, by Ian McEwan; The Road, by Cormac McCarthy; and Midnight’s Children, by Salman Rushdie—, and their corresponding translations into Catalan —Amor perdurable, La carretera and Els fills de la mitjanit. Taking into account some theoretical reflections on phraseology and translation, and by comparing the original novels and their translations, in this article we analyze some examples of phraseological units (PUs) that play a significant stylistic role and we also examine the techniques used by professional translators when faced with this sort of PUs.En aquest article duem a terme una anàlisi de la funció estilística que adopta la fraseologia en tres novel·les contemporànies originals en anglés —Enduring Love, d’Ian McEwan; The Road, de Cormac McCarthy; i Midnight’s Children, de Salman Rushdie— i les seues traduccions al català —Amor perdurable, La carretera i Els fills de la mitjanit, respectivament. Tot partint d’algunes reflexions teòriques a l’entorn de la fraseologia i la traducció, i mitjançant la comparació de les obres originals i les seues traduccions, en aquest treball analitzem alguns exemples d’unitats fraseològiques (UFs) presents en aquests textos que hi adquireixen una funció estilística rellevant i observem quines tècniques de la fraseologia apliquen els traductors quan s’enfronten a aquest tipus d’UFs
