Climate Change in the Media Spotlight – or is it? : A quantitative content analysis on climate change reporting in Swedish newspapers.

Denna studie undersöker hur klimatförändringsrapporteringen ser ut i svenska tidningar under 2018 och 2019. Specifikt studeras Dagens Nyheter (DN) och Aftonbladet och studien identifierar vilka teman inom klimatförändringsrapporteringen som syns på dagordningen samt hur rapporteringen vinklas. Syftet är att studien ska fungera som en indikator över hur rapporteringen om klimatförändring varierar mellan tidningar och hur den skiljer sig över tid. Metoden som används är en kvantitativ innehållsanalys då studien lägger sin tyngd i hur mycket det rapporteras om de olika temana som finns. Materialet består av artiklar från 60 dagar som valdes ut genom ett obundet slumpmässigt urval. Resultatet av studien blev att det under 2018 och 2019 fanns 14 återkommande teman som det rapporterades om inom klimatförändring. Under 2018 publicerade DN fler artiklar än Aftonbladet i vårt urval och DN hade större spridning inom de 14 olika temana. Under 2019 ökade antalet artiklar Aftonbladet publicerade i urvalet samt att tidningen fick större spridning inom temana, vilket kan tyda på ett ökat intresse för rapportering om klimatförändring under 2019. DN:s publicering om klimatförändringarna mellan 2018 och 2019 höll sig konstant. När det kom till de olika vinklarna fann studien att inom klimatförändringen fanns det ingen större skillnad mellan 2018 och 2019. Den tydligaste vinkeln som fanns var säkerheten att klimatförändringen fanns och att man rapporterade om lösningar nationellt eller gränsöverskridande.This study examines media coverage of climate change in Swedish newspapers during 2018 and 2019. Two Swedish newspapers, Dagens Nyheter (DN) and Aftonbladet, are examined and in these newspapers, themes will be identified in their climate change coverage and how the coverage is framed. The aim of this study is that it will work as an indicator in showing the coverage of climate change in DN and Aftonbladet and if it varies between the newspapers and over time. The method that is used is a quantitative content analysis since the study examines how frequently the different themes that exists in newspapers are covered. The material consists of articles from 60 days that has been chosen through a simple random sample. The result of the study was that 14 different themes within climate change coverage were identified in 2018 and 2019. In 2018 DN published more articles than Aftonbladet, DN also covered more themes. In 2019 Aftonbladet increased the number of articles they published and also covered more themes; this may indicate increased interest of climate change coverage during 2019. DN’s coverage of climate change was consistent between 2018 and 2019. When it comes to the different frames within climate change coverage the study found that no bigger difference between 2018 and 2019 existed. The result also showed that the newspapers rarely questioned climate change and that the solution to climate change was reported being on national or transnational level.
