Previous research surrounding environmental journalism has shown that it fluctuates heavily over time regarding the amount of medial content being produced on the subject. This phenomenon is, in this field of research, commonly referred to as attention cycles. Studies have shown that in 2007 environmental journalism reached a new peak in Sweden in which the dominating category of the subject was climate journalism. Climate journalism differs from environmental journalism in that it is solely focused on climate where the effects of global warming are central, whereas environmental journalism is a much broader term.
