Presenting beanies to a new student (ca. 1969)

A photograph of Springfield College student, Marianne (Heidi) Poeder (Class of 1972) handing out beanies to Freshman Edward Kozol and Tom Arnold, both of Springfield College Class of 1973. Poeder is placing beanie on the head of Edward as Tom looks straight at the camera, already wearing his beanie. The caption on the back of the photograph says, "Heidi Poeder '72 presents beanie to Edw. Kozol while Tom Arnold stands by. Eddie and Tom arrived together from Ft. Lauderdale and were the first Frosh boys to arrive."In a tradition that started in the early 1920s and continues to today, entering students to Springfield College wear beanies when they first arrive. Originally students were required to wear their beanies all year, only to be removed on Stepping Up Day in the spring when they officially moved up from freshman status. Today wearing a beanie is no longer required, though over 90 percent of all entering freshman still elect to wear the beanie and continue the tradition.On the back is written, "Heidi Poeder '72 presents beanie to Edw.
