This photograph shows a group of people, most of whom are freshmen at Springfield College, walking up the sidewalk. The freshmen in the photograph are all wearing beanies. Two cars can be seen parked on the street and some other cars are parked in the parking lot on the far end.In a tradition that started in the early 1920s and continues to today, entering students to Springfield College wear beanies when they first arrive. Originally students were required to wear their beanies all year, only to be removed on Stepping Up Day in the spring when they officially moved up from freshman status. Today wearing a beanie is no longer required, though over 90 percent of all entering freshman still elect to wear the beanie and continue the tradition
