During the Early Modern period, the historical genre came to perform a relevant role in the State’s configuration, chiefly in the Portuguese restoration process, in the second half of the 17th century. This paper presents a reflection upon the composition practices of such narratives, and the use of rules dictated in preceptive literature, specifically the works of Cabrera de Córdoba, Agostino Mascardi, San José, and Le Moyne.
