Adiponectin (ADPN) is adipocytokine secreted by adipose tissue. Adiponectin modulates many of the metabolic processes, especially the metabolism of carbohydrates and fatty acids in the liver cells and muscles, indirectly influences on the insulin resistance. Thereby it shows the anti-inflammatory, probably anti-atherogenic activity and improves insulin sensitivity. Adiponectin as a biomarker of insulin resistance that may have potential diagnostic value. Changes of the adiponectin’s concentration are related not only to insulin resistance and the risk of the development of the diabetes of type 2, but also the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
