Causes of insulin resistance are the subject of many clinical studies. Factors affecting this occurrence are divided into two types — genetic and environmental. Environmental factors are: age, gender, physical activity and body mass. Adipose tissue plays a great role along with the adipokines it produces. Progress of civilization has brought upon us a larger problem with obesity caused by an improper diet and the lack of physical activity which leads to the accumulation of adipose tissue. The consequences of obesity are among others hypertension, hyperlipidemia and insulin resistance.
