Progress in the field of neurology and neuroradiology results in the improvement of diagnostics and therapy of the CNS vascular diseases. This dynamic development demands continuous studies of vascular anatomy and physiology. The least well studied part of the brain vascular system are cerebral veins. In this paper we present the summary of morphological and functional studies of the cerebral venous system. The physiological importance of the venous anastomoses, role of the venous system in cerebral blood flow autoregulation and in selected pathological processes are specially addressed.
