Background. A large variety of acquired aphasic syndromes can be correlated to relatively specific brain lesions located at distinct sites in the left cerebral hemisphere. The purpose of this article was to determine neuroanatomical correlates of aphasia following cerebrovascular accident. Material and methods. The research involved 30 stroke patients with a single left-hemisphere-damage lesion and residual mild to severe aphasia. Language, assessed by the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination, was affected to various degrees by a wide range of pathologies.
