The aim of this paper is to compare traditional, categorical approach to personality disorders with the new trend to apply the dimensional model of personality to clinical practice. According to the categorical approach, commonly used in diagnostic manuals, personality disorders are separate entities qualitatively different from mental health. It has been shown that such diagnosis is both problematic for clinicians and harmful to patients. On the other hand, in the dimensional approach the difference between disturbed and healthy personality is only quantitative.
