International audienceDebates on identity of an English nation at the end of the Middle Ages are very controversial. They concern, in particular, language and literature, in relation with the development of English as a written and intellectual language, but in a multilingual space (Latin - English - French). In this frame, the identification of a language and a nation is, for England, very problematic and going back to the texts seems all the more necessary. The analysis of literary, political, didactic or historical texts shows that "nation" is very rarely used.
