A retrospective study was conducted on the perioperative blood management of patients undergoing spinal fusion surgery. The aim was to examine possible ways to minimize allogeneic blood transfusion by identifying the factors that may influence the risk of transfusion and to test the efficacy of two well-known methods of perioperative blood management, preoperative autologous blood donation (PABD) and intraoperative use of blood savers. Data of 515 patients undergoing spinal fusion for treatment of scoliosis or spinal stenosis from July 1989 to July 2013 were initially collected.
