In the North Woods, Seattle-based Plum Creek Timber Co. is proposing the largest development in Maine\u27s history, encompassing some 70 lakes and ponds and more than 400,000 acres. Plum Creek has split its potential opponents with a promise of land protection, hired four top law firms, courted endorsements, and placed TV ads. Opponents like the Natural Resources Council of Maine (NRCM) say nothing less than the soul of the North Woods and Moosehead Lake is at stake. Responding to opposition, Plum Creek released a revised plan a few days after announcing a deal with three environmental organizations to protect 330,000 acres, depending on state approval of its application. Brownie Carson, director of NRCM, says smaller landowners will take Maine\u27s Land Use Regulatory Commission\u27s handling of the project as a sign of how the northern forest will look in a generation or two
