FMC BioPolymer on Rockland\u27s waterfront is the last carrageenan processing plant in the country and one of the city\u27s largest businesses. Recently the city council rejected the company\u27s landfill contract extension and forged a compromise that included an increase in the dumping fee from $3.50 to $22 per cubic yard and a lower disposal volume. FMC is working to recycle its seaweed byproduct by creating a fertilizer called Algefiber. FMC hopes not to use the landfill after 2006.
