Robotics in Space Related Applications

Robots constitute a significant part of space activities and will continue to contribute in space applications because of the cost potential and many other benefits they represent. Because robots can work virtually unattended for long periods of time, the rise in productivity will allow us to complete projects faster. As the use of robots in space increases, so will the benefits of having such technology. Robots will be used for dangerous or undesirable tasks and thus freeing humans from the hazards associated with such work. As robot technology advances to the state of autonomy, humans can be freed from the hostile environment in space. This paper reviews the current and planned uses of robots in space. Current robot activities present at Kennedy Space Center are also discussed. The Remote Manipulator System, which is used in most shuttle missions, is reviewed. Current programs such as the Flight Telerobotic Servicer, Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle, and Mars Explorer, are also explained. Technical hurdles limiting the use of robots in space are identified.
