Some people avoid going to church for the same reason. But ignorance of our sickness doesn't make us healthy, and ignorance of our sin doesn't make us innocent. Roman law is considered to be the source of the idea that ignorance of the law excuses no one. But the concept originated much earlier. When God gave the law to Israel, He established that even unintentional sin required a sacrifice for forgiveness. There are some who live according to their own standards of right and wrong, therefore they may feel good about themselves, but that does not mean that they are spiritually healthy. It is amazing what we are able to delude ourselves about or to rationalize the most horrific acts. Only when we are measured up against God's standard of righteousness can we know the condition of our personal spiritual health. And what is the yardstick that we use in this measurement? Jesus - His acts while He was with us on earth, His words as quoted in the Bible. None of us can achieve the righteousness of Christ, but thankfully we don't have to. He shares His righteousness with us. The good news about finding out what's wrong with us is that we can be cured. We know the Great Physician and his medicine is good for us. The practice of making resolutions for the new year is thought to have first caught on among the ancient Babylonians, who made promises in order to earn the favor of the gods and start the year off on the right foot. (They would reportedly vow to pay off debts and return borrowed objects.) The Romans began each year by making promises to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named. In the Medieval era, the knights took the "peacock vow" at the end of the Christmas season each year to re-affirm their commitment to chivalry. At watchnight services, many Christians prepare for the year ahead by praying and making these resolutions. This tradition has many other religious parallels. During Judaism's New Year, Rosh Hashanah, through the High Holidays and culminating in Yorn Kippur (the Day of Atonement), one is to reflect upon one's wrongdoings over the year and both seek and offer forgiveness. The concept, regardless of creed, is to reflect upon self-improvement annually.
