CIGARETTES ' In the office Ted Hocking chewing a licorice substitute for'a cigarette^ Hadn’t had a smoke for two weeks* A little overweight but still on his feet. * We recall a male parent who when he obstained from smoking became bedfasti The cigarette of today is a small cylinder containing a drug of finely cut smoking tob­acco. In our teenage days there was only two brands of tobacco, Dukes Mixture and Bull Durham put up in small cotton bags. The one sold'for 50, the other 100 a sadk* Father aways had a number of hired men. Coffeebreaks now, smoke periods then. Everyone helped himself and rolled his own. We became veiy efficient at rolling them and smoked just (bo be smoking. We hauled pulp with horwes and wagons from the Ogden Sugar Factory, six miles distant. We had to pass a small store; driving the rear team we slowed down until the other pulp wagon was some distance ahead. We had decided that if we were going to smoke we had better buy our own tobacco. We stopped at the store, put our nickle on the counter And asked for a sack of Dukes Mixture. The lady looked on the shelf and said "I’m sorry, but we are out of tobacco'1. The nickle in our pocket, sheepishly we drove on. We had a guilty conscience; having been taught that we shouldn’t smoke. ' ■ ' ' We are not superstitious, nor do we believe in dreams, visions, signs, omens, or any­thing supernatural, yet how come Tilly Douglas was out of tobacco? ’ We have never spent a nickle for the weed or smoked since. That was 70 years ago. The Iiahona girls and their Daddys of the Second Ward Primary held their Daddy^-Daugh- ter dinner party Friday evenings The theme "Knights and Ladies" was used in decorations and games. Some 60 guests enjoyed a lovely dinner followed by games and dancing. Grace was offered by Warren Harrisi The program included Tribute tp the Fathers by Shanon Miller with her father Ken Miller responding. Christine Bourne sang "I Love to Whistle" accompanied by Mrs, Isabelle Bohnet; Jean Thomson gave a reading; the class sang the Iiahona Song direct­ed by Mrs. Bohnet and accompanied by Mr si Maud Ririe. Following the dance "Good Night Ladies, Good Night Daddys" was sung by the fathers and daughters. TROPICAL IAMB- CHOPS 6 double lamb chops, 2" minimum thickness Is tsp, salt i tsp. pepper - 1 cup biscuit mix 2 cooking apples 1 small onion 1 stalk celery . 2 cup crushed pineapple tsp, sugar 1 cup cooked rice 1 tsp. curry powder 1 tsp. chopped chives. ’ Heavy duty quilted foil, * METHOD* Line firebox with quilted foil. Let coals Burn down until covered with grey ashes. Cut pocket in meaty side of each chop. Rub well inside & out with salt and pepper;' dredge'chops in bisquit mix. Chop apples, onion, celery; add remaining ingredients and mix well. Fill pockets in chops with apple stuffing and skewer edges together. Wrap in double thickness of foil’ seal securely. Wrap extra stuffing in foil. Grill chops and stuffing 20 minutes on each side. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Godfrey of Cardston won the award for "Show Case 64" at the recent Furniture Show in Toronto. Their choice ranked first in choices of displays put on by the Floor Covering Institute of Ontario and the Furniture & Furnishings Magazine. They receive an all expense paid trip to Burmuda, Clarence (Dutch) Matson, a former résident of the Magrath and Cardston districts^ pass­ed away suddenly in Penticton Monday. Fore­man of a work crew, the late Mr, Ifetson was instantly killed when the roof àf a building they were demolishing collapsed. He was 53 years of age.
