Funeral cervices for the late John Laird Peterson were held Friday afternoon in the First Ward Church with Elder George T. Dudley conducting the services. Open­ing song by the choir "Sweet Hour of Prayer" was led by Reece Gibb with Mrs, Norah Ackroyd as organist. Bishop Horace Ririe offered the opening prayer, after which the choir sang "O’ My Father". Elder Ira C. Fletcher spoke on the life of the deceased. Vocal solo "My Faith in Thee" was sang by Reece Gibb accompanied at the piano by Miss Ruth Long of Spring Coulee, Bishop Elmer Ririe spoke words of comfort to the bereav­ed; Kenneth Long* accompanied by his daugh­ter Ruth, rendered a vocal solo "Hold Thy My Hand". Closing remarks were given by HIshop C; C. Spencer; Closing number by the choir was "Abide with Me", James E. Harker of Raymond offered the closing prayer. The many floral tributes were carried by neighbors and friends; Christen­son Bros, were in charge of arrangements. Elder Barton Poulson of Lethbridge dedic­ated the grave. Pallbearers were: Douglas Harker, Varn Helton, Allan Holladay, Don and Lynn Heldrum, Earl Scott of Cardston. He leaves to mourn his wife, Grace, hie father, A. 0. That is, if all of us get busy right now and elect a Permanent Celebration Committee to start preparing for our 50th birthday. Two years is just enough if we start at once. Some Birthday Celebration Possibilities: (1) A "Heautify Your Town" campaign. Simil­ar to the one conducted by the Canadian Junior Chamber of Commerce this year. (2) A "Most Beautiful Grounds" competition. (3) A "Best Garden" Competition. (4) A 50th Anniversary Year-book to in­clude a history of Magrath and pictures of interesting celebration events. (5) A Monster Parade,.definitely planned to follow a theme or themes. ,/ (6) A celebration built around a Two-Day Agricultural Fair and Race Meet, Potential location: The Town Park Block and the School- Assembly Hall Block, Why couldn't the road north of the Public School be closed off to allow the Grandstand to be moved back and the race track expanded? It would also allow i/ ‘ In the school playgrounds to be enlarged. If this was done and all fences between the schools and the park removed (necessary roads would be built for coal-hauling, etc.) we would have about 17.5 acres and two large halls In which to conduct our celebration and fair, "When we get our big B.B. Hall we will have adequate facilities for our fair.) The above ideas are suggestive only. The important job at present is to get a committee formed, and start planning our 50 th Birthday Celebration (July 23, 24th, 1949) So that it will indeed be an event to be remembered, J. E.
