UND Military Appreciation Day activities include Blackhawk helicopter landing on Quad, soldiers rappelling face of law school

A North Dakota Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopter will land on the heart of the University of North Dakota campus at 8 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 1, as part of Military Appreciation Day activities at the school. The landing zone will be on the UND Quad grass in front of the Carnegie building (to the north). The University asks the public to steer clear of this area until the engines have been shut down. There will be UND Reserve Officer Training Corps members and University Police on hand to ensure public safety. The public also is asked stay away from the area during the aircraft’s departure at 5 p.m. The Blackhawk will make a noisy approach from the north as it arrives. Between 11 a.m. and noon, UND President Robert Kelley and senior leaders from the North Dakota Army National Guard will host an ice cream social near the landing site for the Blackhawk. The University community and public are encouraged to stop by and enjoy a treat. UND’s Military Appreciation Day activities also include a rock wall for students to climb and enjoy. The North Dakota National Guard also will have an Air Defense Avenger, Sentinel Radar and water purification system on hand for static displays. UND Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets will conduct rappelling displays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the UND Law School building. Finally, members of the U.S. military are encouraged to attend the UND vs. Drake University football game at 7 p.m. at the Alerus Center. U.S. military ID holders are eligible to receive up to four free tickets to the game. Additional tickets can be purchased for $5 apiece. Tickets can be picked up at the Alerus Center box office before game time
