Sept. 11 Remembrance, Friday Noon at Memorial Union

The University of North Dakota will observe the 10th anniversary of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, with a remembrance ceremony outside the Memorial Union on campus at noon on Friday. The ceremony will include remarks by UND President Robert Kelley and others, an appearance by the UND Army Reserve Officer Training Corps color guard, music and the laying of a wreath near the Union flagpoles at the headstone and tree commemorating Sept. 11. It will last approximately 45 minutes and will be moved inside the Union in the event of inclement weather. UND Student Government is once again hosting the remembrance ceremony. “It’s important for student government to take note of this event because so many families were affected by 9/11, and there are still many people affected by it,” said Kylie Oversen, UND student body president. “We also want our service men and women to know that what they’ve done for our country is appreciated.” Ten years ago, al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four airliners, crashing two into the World Trade Center towers in New York and one into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., killing nearly 3,000 people. United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pa., after passengers attempted to regain control of the aircraft. Speakers during the program will include: Hugh Grindberg, a 23-year veteran of the North Dakota National Guard who served a tour of duty in Iraq.Tony Trimarco, Memorial Union director, who is a native of New York and a retired 26-year Air Force veteran
