In October, 1931 ground was broken for new buildings necessary to house the largest, most modern “book” type paper machine able to be purchased at the time. Five short months later on March 25, 1932 the 242-inch wide, high speed machine came online. Competitors in the industry were skeptical that such a wide, fast moving machine could produce quality paper, however, the machine emerged as the most efficient and lowest cost producer. In this photograph, new dryers are being installed near the wet end of No. 12 Machine. Extra dryers were necessary to take care of space consumed by the size press being installed.
