The purpose of this study is to clarify the ascetic practices by Saito Shintaro (hereafter, Shintaro), who visited feudal clans in numerous places to teach swordsmanship during the late 1840s. He was one of three major instructors at the training center for kenjutsu (dojo), called renpeikan (military drill building), and he was the eldest son of Saito Yakuro, who was well known as one of the founders of the shintomunen-ryu style of martial arts during the late Tohugawa period.
