The Street in the American Conception of the City The XIXth century ideologies As Americans were trying to cope with industrialization, immigration and urbanization, they also became increasingly aware that they were an ethnically and culturally diverse people. The street was then perceived as a mirror of their social diversity and many intellectuals believed that if everyone shared the values embodied in the "home", specific political, economic and social problems would resolve themselves.
