We have tried to translate "Biblische und dogmatische Theologie," by H. Schlier, and "Die Theologie des Neuen Testaments und die Dogmatik," by A. Schlatter, into Japanese. On the one hand, the two differ from each other in confession, time, and methodology, but they have a common problem-consciousness, that biblical theology should not be isolated from dogmatics, so that it may continue to be biblical theology. The main Discourse I. The Investigation of the Thesis of H. Schlier Schlier\u27s understanding of New Testament Theology is based on a clear methodological consciousness. He attempts to discuss the relation between dogmatics and biblical theology independent of dogmatics. He fairly acknowledges both the diversity and unity of the New Testament documents. They aim to be testimonies of the revelation of Christ. Schlier refers to "the principal openness." This comes from the openness of "the original word," which makes dogmatics necessary to New Testament theology. Thus, biblical theology and dogmatics are closely tied together. He admits this close relationship between the two subjects on the ground of their independence. In any case, we are persuaded by his energetic activity that the critical-philological study of the New Testament is by no means in consistent with dogmatics, but that, on the contrary, they need each other
