I. Schlatter\u27s view of New Testament Theology is to be arranged as follows: As New Testament Theology belongs to historical study, it must be studied by the historical method. The difference between historical and dogmatic study must be clearly distinguished. History and theology, however, are linked tightly together and the New Testament scholar is not allowed to be content with historical study alone; he must also be a dogmatician. Furthermore, while it is true that the historical study of the New Testament is not neutral but falls under the influence of the thoughts of the age, the historical study of the New Testament does not rely on dogmatics but interacts with it. In fact, New Testament Theology and dogmatics are both historical: the former plays a part in describing history and the latter in answering it. And since the ideas in the New Testament develop out of the scriptures themselves-the most important scriptural occurrence being the history of Jesus-the Bible thus is a unified whole which has at its centre Jesus Christ. II. The contribution of Schlatter to New Testament Theology is as great as it is because he looked through the danger into which the critical studies of his age were falling, and made historical and dogmatical studies supplementary concerns. His intention was to enliven the field of critical studies using the ideas within the Bible. This contribution lasts to our age. His studies, however, ommitted one step which we should mention here. That is what we today call hermeneutical studies which must be studied within the framework of the New Testament. They are not studies which originate in history or dogmatics but within the New Testament area itself. Our sense of history is much different today from Schlatter\u27s time and this point must be further studied, if we are to follow the line of Schlatter. But, again, Schlatter\u27s critical mind as it was applied to New Testament studies is still effective today
