A. G. Baumgarten defines beauty as "perfectio cognitionis sensitivae, qua talis" in §14 of his Aesthetica (1750). The qualification of cognition as "sensitiva" is highlighted by the phrase "qua talis (as such)", which receives additional emphasis through the preceding comma. Obviously, Baumgarten\u27s intention of this emphasis lies in marking out the realm of sensitive cognition against that of rational cognition. In the same section, however, he refers to §521 of his Metaphysica (1739), where sensitive cognition is ranked as "inferior". The definition of beauty thus presupposes a graded system of cognition in which sensitive cognition occupies the middle position.
