The sugarcane crop in the geographical area called Hoya del Rio Suarez, in the departments of Boyacá and Santander (Colombia), covers about 45,000 hectares; the variety 75-11 RD is established in 70% of the cultivated area and its average growing period is 17 months. This represents a high phytosanitary risk and disadvantages versus other sugarcane producing regions with lower growth cycles. Varieties of sugarcane obtained by Cenicaña represent alternatives for the competitiveness and productivity for the Colombian sugarcane industry.
